We like a sure thing… we want to know how everything will work out before we even get started. But then we’re met with a roadblock… a job loss… a lousy health report… a relationship ends… and we’re stuck in this place of uncertainty.
When facing the Unknown, we need to focus on our Heavenly Father, who tells us—even when we can’t see the way out—He’s in the middle of it with us… walking with us every step!
Discussion Questions
Don’t be afraid to add to this list, skip questions that don’t work for your group, or branch off with additional questions as discussion unfolds. Conversation is key! This is the time to work through the application of scripture and have group members figure things out together.
- How do you tend to deal with the uncertainty of the future? Do you constantly read the news searching for the most ‘up-to-date’ information? Do you plan and prepare for possible upcoming disasters? What do you think the Biblical response should be? Should there be a practical/physical response of preparing or not?
- “Uncertainty is unavoidable, but fear is optional.” What are you uncertain about in your life? What do you fear most? Do these two ever coincide? What steps can you take today to address your fear in a godly way?
- Have you ever thought about Jesus as the brave, courageous leader He was, or do you picture Him as gentle and reserved? How is Jesus the perfect combination of meekness and strength, and how can we mimic Him in our own lives?
- What does it look like to boldly follow Jesus? Read 2 Timothy 3:16–17. How can we use His Word to “teach, reprove, correct, and train others” while simultaneously being so attractive to the world that they see light and His Spirit in us?
- In the second century, Claudius Galenus said this of Christians, “For fearlessness of death and the hereafter is something we witness in them every day.” Read Philippians 1:21–23. Are you afraid of death? Why or why not? How can we have the same confidence as the Christians Claudius referred to?
- With your group, review and discuss the three questions Pastor Anthony mentioned at the end of this week’s sermon…
- How valuable is your faith in Jesus? (Does how you live out your faith declare what you value?)
- Is your faith in Jesus unmovable? Even to the point of death?
- What are you afraid of?
- Read Luke 9:23–24. What does it look like for you to deny yourself, take up your cross daily, and follow Jesus? Identify obstacles that might prevent you from doing this. Discuss potential solutions with your life group.
- Spend some time with your group reading what the Bible says about fear. You can start with 2 Timothy 1:7, Joshua 1:9, Isaiah 41:10, Psalm 27:1–3, Psalm 33:8, Revelation 2:10, Hebrews 13:6, and Psalm 56:4. What stands out to you as you review these verses together?
