In the Old Testament, God paints a clear and beautiful picture through Samuel of what it looks like to be used by Him. As we read about Samuel’s calling and development into a servant, we’ll find qualities of a servant’s heart that we can exemplify and grow into in this new year!

- God is always present in our lives, but it can be challenging to feel His presence in times when life is hard, and He’s silent. In those times, how have you sought after Him to understand that He is with you? Questions about following Jesus?
- What encouragement would you offer someone feeling alone and abandoned by God during a valley in their personal lives? Would that advice differ depending on whether that individual knew the Lord?
- Read 1 Samuel 3:10. How often do you stop and listen to what God tells you? What practices have you put in place to make sure this happens?
- Pastor Matt reviewed four qualities of a servant’s heart. Reflect on your life and think about which areas you can focus on growing in this year. Share with your life group and discuss practical ways you can do this and how Scripture can guide you.
- Samuel remained faithful throughout his entire life. Pastor Matt pointed out that this is a rarity. Staying faithful can be difficult in times of intense trial, especially when we feel like God doesn’t care or isn’t there for us. Review what Samuel did and discuss other Biblical principles to ensure we remain faithful even in dark times.
- Think of those you’ve encountered in your life who have consistently and faithfully exuded a servant’s heart. Consider some Biblical examples of men and women who have done the same. What qualities did those individuals possess? Think about the character traits that they have in common and ask the Lord to give us that same heart.
