Discussion Questions

Don’t be afraid to add to this list, skip questions that don’t work for your group, or branch off with additional questions as discussion unfolds. Conversation is key! This is the time to work through the application of scripture and have group members figure things out together.

  1. Pastor Matt described how Barnabas’ name meant “son of encouragement.” How does encouraging someone in Christ differ from non-biblical encouragement? How might the outcomes differ? How can you discern which type of encouragement you give others?
  2. If you had a nickname that described who you are, what would it be?
  3. Pastor Matt spoke about his trip to Estonia being a pivotal time when God worked in his heart. Have you ever had an experience like that in your own life? How did God change you through that experience?
  4. Read 1 Peter 3:15. If you were presented with the opportunity to explain the gospel to someone who doesn’t know Jesus, would you be prepared? Discuss with your group a basic outline of the gospel that you can have ready for whenever the time arises. Have you ever had to defend your faith? What did that look like, and how could you be even more prepared to go into the next conversation?
  5. Pastor Matt stated, “if you’re going to live your life on mission, you need to be prepared for opposition.” The apostle Paul experienced this firsthand in Acts 13. In your experience of spreading the good news to others, have you ever been persecuted or seen a complete lack of response? What happened, and how did you respond? How can we continue in encouragement when we are met with such opposition and discouragement?
  6. Paul faced major persecution in Lystra, but then Acts 16:1 describes how Paul went back and met Timothy, who ended up being a huge blessing to Paul and one of his most devoted disciples. There are so many benefits to persevering in the name of Jesus through the hardship we encounter. How has this been illustrated in your life?
  7. What practical steps can you take this week to live on mission for Christ? What does it look like to “go” boldly into your community or workplace proclaiming your faith? How can your Life Group help you stay focused and accountable for fulfilling this mission?

Accountability

  • Where are you reading in the Bible this week? What has God been revealing to you through your quiet time with Him?
  • Discuss any struggles you may be going through with your group.
  • How can you pray for your group this week? How can they be praying for you?
