Discussion Questions
Don’t be afraid to add to this list, skip questions that don’t work for your group, or branch off with additional questions as discussion unfolds. Conversation is key! This is the time to work through the application of scripture and have group members figure things out together.
- Have you ever truly cried out to God? Have you ever been unable to articulate a need or request to God? If you’re comfortable, please share those experiences with your group. In addition to past experiences, where do you need God to intervene in your life today?
- Read Psalm 5:3. David presents his requests to God in the morning and then waits in expectation. What does this illustrate about David’s character and about God’s character?
- Read Psalm 5:11–12. These verses remind us that God acts as our defender, our source of blessings, and our shield of protection. Which of these stood out to you? Where have you seen each play out in your life?
- Similar to James 1:2, Psalm 5:11–12 remind us that those who trust in the Lord will rejoice in Him and find their joy in Him, even in the midst of trials. Pastor Anthony mentioned that we can sometimes be so laser-focused on our trials and difficulties that we can’t see the immense blessings that God has placed right in front of us. Has there ever been a time in your life when you have missed out on God’s blessings/joy in your life because you were too distraught over something else? How can we avoid this trap in the future?
- Sometimes we don’t experience the Lord’s blessings because we have preconceived ideas of what those blessings should look like. How would you describe a blessing by God? Read Proverbs 3:5–6 and 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18. What does it look like to “acknowledge Him in all our ways” and to see God’s blessings through the lens of His eyes instead of our own?
- Pastor Harrell closed the message by saying, “who we are and what we become is a whole lot more important to God than what we do. Let’s not love Him simply for what He does, but let’s love Him first and foremost for who He is.” When was the last time you prayed to God and worshipped Him by describing His character and goodness? Take time as a group to do just that today.
