Don’t Worry, Part 1

Don’t Worry, Part 1

As humans, we worry. We worry about so many things… money… life… the future. Before we know it, we’re consumed.

The truth is, we’re always going to struggle with worry as long as our focus is on the wrong thing. At the end of Matthew 6, Jesus gives us the solution by saying to us “Look up. Eyes on Me.”

Because when we’ve got our focus on God, we see there is no reason to worry. God is the One doing the providing!

Discussion Questions

Don’t be afraid to add to this list, skip questions that don’t work for your group, or branch off with additional questions as discussion unfolds. Conversation is key! This is the time to work through the application of scripture and have group members figure things out together.

  1. Jesus says that the things that you are most devoted to are the things that you will worry the most about. What are you most devoted to? What do you spend your time worrying about? What practical steps can you take this week to keep your eyes on Jesus and live a life surrendered to Him?
  2. Sometimes we justify our worry so much that we start to feel irresponsible if we don’t worry. Have you ever found yourself in this position? Do you comfort yourself with worry? Why do you think this is the case, and how can you alter this behavior to have a biblical perspective of worry?
  3. Read Matthew 6:26–27. Do you truly believe the words of Jesus that God cares for you more than He cares for His beautiful, masterful creation? Has a particular life circumstance ever caused you to doubt this? What do we do when we feel like we can’t see God’s care and protection in our lives?
  4. Sometimes we think that if we can just get God’s power to align with our plan, then it will all work out in the best way. Have you ever allowed your nearsightedness to block God’s perfect plan for your life because you thought you knew better than Him? How do we keep from doing this when we face disappointment or when the path we have been placed on is not what we had hoped or imagined for our lives?
  5. Can you think of a biblical example or a past personal example of God’s deliverance from a particularly stressful or difficult situation? How does His provision in these examples alter your perspective of what you are worrying about today?
  6. Read Ephesians 3:17–21 and reflect on the truths in these verses. God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think. Share a time when this has happened in your life. How did this impact your personal relationship with God?
  7. Read Philippians 4:6-8. We often focus on verses 6 and 7, but we don’t take the time to reflect on verse 8. Discuss with your group how utilizing the directives in this verse can help stop worry in its tracks before it even comes to fruition in our minds.

Accountability

  • Where are you reading in the Bible this week? What has God been revealing to you through your quiet time with Him?
  • Discuss any struggles you may be going through with your group.
  • How can you be praying for your group this week? How can they be praying for you?
