What Defines a Great Church?

Ken Harrell
Senior Pastor
The Church isn’t just a building… it’s the people. We are the Church. And God doesn’t want us to be just another church. He doesn’t even want us to be a good Church. So if we know God wants more from us, we need to ask ourselves, “What Defines a Great Church?”
Fill-in NotesKey Scripture
Take Away / Application
A great church is filled with people who are committed, compassionate, pliable, expendable for God’s mission, and have ownership as part of the church body.
Discussion Questions
Don’t be afraid to add to this list, skip questions that don’t work for your group or branch off with additional questions as discussion unfolds. Conversation is key! This is the time to work through the application of scripture and have group members figure things out together.
We commit and give priority to many things: meeting with friends, checking social media, sports, workouts, coffee, TV shows, etc. However, our commitment to church—whether attending, serving, or fellowshipping with one another—tends to lack in priority with the others things in our life.
- Why do you think we’re that way?
- How committed are you? Is church a priority for you?
It’s been said, “Good intentions have never accomplished a single thing.”
- How does consistency prove and put legs to our commitment?
Initiative is a quality of true commitment.
- How have you seen people take the initiative with you? Are you responding to their initiative?
- How can you begin to take the initiative with others?
In your notes, under point number two, “Compassion”, read the words in the box.
- Discuss.
When it comes to any of us being part of the church, we must move from being spectators to active participants.
- If church is truly the people and not a building, how do you/we become active participants? {note
Accountability
- Share one thing you’ve learned from your time in the Bible this week?
- What is God doing through your prayer life?
