Unwavering, Part 3: Alone!

Ken Harrell

Senior Pastor

In our lives, we like options. We like to pick and choose what best fits our needs and wants. But when it comes to salvation, there’s something God has made absolutely clear to us. There’s no options… no picking and choosing… salvation is only possible when it’s done His way… Alone!

Fill-in Notes

Key Scripture

Ephesians 2:8–9

Take Away / Application

Salvation comes by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

Discussion Questions

Don’t be afraid to add to this list, skip questions that don’t work for your group or branch off with additional questions as discussion unfolds. Conversation is key! This is the time to work through the application of scripture and have group members figure things out together.

Review the three introductory statements in your notes.

  1. What are various ways people try to get to heaven or get on good terms with God? After sharing, read Proverbs 14:12.
  2. Read Ephesians 2:8–9 and John 14:6. Biblically what is the only way to a right relationship with God and eternal life in heaven?
  3. Read Romans 5:8 and John 1:1–4, 14. People follow many religions where they must work their way up to their god. However, only in Christianity does God come down to be with, make a way for, and finish the work for all to come to Him. Discuss.

Salvation comes by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

  1. Clearly and simply define what is meant by using the word “salvation.”
  2. Read Romans 3:10–18, 23 and Isaiah 53:6. In having a right biblical understanding of who we are, why is God’s grace necessary? How can God’s grace lead to praising and worshiping Him more?
  3. We put faith in things every day: the chair you sit on, your car starting, your alarm clock going off, etc. Read Hebrews 11:1. Discuss what it means to have biblical faith.
  4. The object of a Christian’s faith is Jesus Christ. Read Hebrews 9:22; Ephesians 1:7; Romans 6:23; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 1:18–19, 2:24; 1 John 2:2; John 14:6. Why is Jesus the only way to a right relationship with God and eternal life in heaven?
  5. You are not saved by good works but for good works. Read Ephesians 2:10. Explain in what ways the good works in Christ differ from the “works” (v9) prior to Christ?

Putting God’s Word and the message into action.

How confident are you in sharing the Gospel (the Good News of Jesus Christ) with others? Where do you need help? Discuss as a group.

Accountability

  1. What have you learned from your time in the Bible this week? What is showing you about God and yourself?
  2. How is your prayer life? Are you spending quality time in prayer with the Lord?
