Discussion Questions

Don’t be afraid to add to this list, skip questions that don’t work for your group, or branch off with additional questions as discussion unfolds. Conversation is key! This is the time to work through the application of scripture and have group members figure things out together.

  1. Read 2 Corinthians 5:17. What does this verse tell us about how God sees us once we accept Christ? Do you see yourself and other Christians in this way? How does this verse provide us with both confidence and humility simultaneously? How can we use this verse while witnessing to teach others about the power of the gospel?
  2. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:11–12. Tom Thompson mentioned “work ethic and stewardship” as one of the seven practices of discipleship. Reflect on your home, finances, skills, talents, time, and other resources. Which area(s) of your life do you consider yourself a good steward and why? How are you using these for the Kingdom? Which area(s) can you focus more on this year? What are some practical ways to accomplish this?
  3. We learned that a part of The Refuge culture is for people to feel “relationally safe.” Think of a time when you felt relationally safe. What did the other person/people in that situation do or say to make you feel that way? Now think of a time you did not feel relationally safe. What made you feel that way? What were the outcomes of those situations? Discuss with your group how your group can be a relationally safe place.
  4. Have you—or any of your loved ones—struggled with addiction? How have you ministered to those?
  5. One of the men in the video shared that accountability was essential for getting past his addictions. When has accountability had a major impact on you? Is there a current situation where accountability would be helpful? Please share if you feel comfortable or pull someone aside that you trust.
  6. Tom described that the enemy forces his way in our ears, condemning us of our sins. We hide the sin (put fig leaves around it), allow guilt/shame to creep in, which adds to the issue. Was there a time in your life when you didn’t handle your sin in a Godly manner where you acknowledged it, confessed it, and repented from it? What was the result?

Accountability

  • Where are you reading in the Bible this week, and what is God revealing to you?
  • Discuss any struggles you may be going through with your group.
  • How can you be praying for your group this week? How can they be praying for you?
